Proofreading -- initial editing (or against previously edited texts) to identify grammar, punctuation, spelling, and typographical errors. I check for pronouns that don't modify their nouns and verbs that don't match their subjects. Copyediting -- proofreading PLUS a review of style, content errors, and facts. I identify jargon, dangling modifiers, repetitive words or phrases, and run-on sentences or paragraphs. Content Editing -- substantive development editing. For fiction manuscripts, I highlight areas where readers need to be shown not told, where active voice needs to be used, and where story line is confusing.
